Il a accepté chacun des deux sujets au milieu de mon exposé sans attendre que j'aie fini. C'est à dire que le second (la Fantastique) formera, dit-il, le spectacle d'ouverture de son opéra des Champs Elysées qui ouvre en octobre 1912.\u003cbr\u003eTout cela est confidentiel et entre nous deux. Il m'a demandé le secret jusqu'à la signature.\u003cbr\u003eQuand il m'a dit : \"Quelles conditions ?\" je l'ai laissé parler. Et après deux ou trois répliques nous avons conclu sur les chiffres - espacés... échelonnés mais dont je trouve le total énorme comparé au simple livret de trente pages qu'on me demande pour chaque spectacle.\u003cbr\u003eScène qui me fait rire, deux jours plus tard :\u0026nbsp;\u003cbr\u003eAu moment où j'ai ouvert devant lui la partition d'orchestre de la Fantastique, j'ai surpris un mouvement instinctif de recul et je me suis dit immédiatement :\u0026nbsp;\u003cbr\u003e\"Toi, je te tiens. Tu es directeur d'opéra et tu ne sais pas un mot de musique.\"\u003cbr\u003eAlors, je lui ai ouvert la partition sous le nez, j'ai rapproché ma chaise et je lui ai lu, sans pitié, les 226 pages, mesure par mesure avec tous les commentaires littéraires que je pouvais imaginer, sachant qu'il ne pourrait jamais me faire une objection, qu'il serait intimidé jusqu'à la fin, et qu'il finirait par m'être reconnaissant de ne pas lui avoir dit une fois :\u0026nbsp;\u003cbr\u003e\"Comment comprenez-vous ce dialogue entre l'alto et le troisième cor ?\"\u003cbr\u003e(la phrase à ne pas dire).\u003cbr\u003e-\u003cbr\u003eMercredi 3h\u003cbr\u003eJe reçois à l'instant cette dépêche :\u0026nbsp;\u003cbr\u003e\"Bakst enthousiaste. Je télégraphe chez les lions. Compliments.\"\u003cbr\u003eAstruc\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBakst est l'artiste qui fait à la fois les décors, les costumes et la mise en scène des ballets russes. Il est intelligent et très consciencieux. Il avait dit à Astruc : \"Je voudrais pourtant bien savoir quel sujet choisit M. Louys, parce qu'il me faudra trois mois d'études avant mon premier dessin\".\u003cbr\u003eLe 1er tableau se passe chez Judith (Judée) le second dans le camp d'Holopherne (Assyrie). C'est cela qui lui plaît.\u003cbr\u003eQuant au télégramme d'A chez les lions, il signifie qu'après avoir appris que j'acceptais en principe, Ida Rubinstein a quitté l'Europe le 10 aout sans avoir la moindre idée du sujet que je ne voulais pas dire. Elle passe l'été (ou plutôt l'hiver austral) en Rhodesia, au delà du dernier chemin de fer.
