Charles Garnier »

Central horizontal fold, small brown stain on the first page, inventory number in pencil (« 96086 ») at the foot of the second.

A valuable testimony to Garnier the theorist and polemicist, on the threshold of the year that would reveal the Opéra to Parisians.

In January 1867, Garnier had been directing for six years the building site he had won in the 1861 competition. He worked from a temporary office erected in the rue Neuve-des-Mathurins, as close as possible to the works, from where this letter was sent. The façade would be inaugurated a few months later, on 15 August 1867, amid the splendours of the Exposition universelle.

A resident of the Villa Médicis, Garnier had travelled to Greece in 1852 in the company of Théophile Gautier, the painter Alfred de Curzon, and Edmond About. Traces of red and blue found on a metope had placed him among the proponents of the polychromy of ancient temples, a thesis he defended at the Salon of 1853 with his restoration of the Temple of Aegina.

The wish to see architecture « un peu appréci[ée] par la foule » finally foreshadows Garnier the writer. He himself would take up the pen two years later with À travers les arts.
