This novel is the first part of The American Comedy, a diptych completed in 1969 by Farewell Gary Cooper. Both were first published in English, under the titles The Talent Scout (1961) and The Ski Bum (1965), before being translated into French by Jean Rosenthal, with the author's participation. As with Lady L. a few years earlier, Gary played with literary identities: when the novel was published in London in 1961, it was attributed to a certain John Markham Beach, who was also supposed to have translated Promise at Dawn.
