Charming and intimate letter in which Breton apologises for having kept his hosts waiting, explaining that an unexpectedly prolonged visit to Picasso prevented him from arriving on time. Although the visit was necessary, he notes that Jacqueline had been quite upset, and he wishes to offer his regrets without delay.

Breton adds that he had hoped to spend more time with Georges Olive and to meet Madame Olive’s brother, whom Pierre Mabille praises on every occasion. The remark leads to a characteristically Bretonian aside on the difficulty of organising one’s Sundays “in this hostile season, when there are so many umbrellas in the streets”.

He ends on an affectionate note, thanking Madame Olive for the “magnificent, poetic dress” she gifted to his young daughter, who refuses to take it off, and asks that his warm regards be conveyed to her husband.

Je me suis pris coupable envers vous, pour avoir dû m'attarder démesurément chez Picasso, alors que vous nous attendiez. Bien qu'il y eût eu nécessité à cela, j'ai vu que Jacqueline en était très malheureuse et je ne veux pas tarder à vous en présenter mes excuses. J'espérais revoir un peu plus longtemps M. Georges Olive et je me réjouissais de connaître votre frère, que Pierre Mabille ne perd aucune occasion de me vanter. Mais on dispose mal des dimanches de cette saison hostile, où il y a tant de parapluies dans les rues.
La petite fille ne veut plus quitter la magnifique robe toute poétique dont vous lui avez fait présent et que je ne me lasse pas d'admirer.
