CAZOTTE (Jacques). Ollivier, poëme en prose.
Paris: Pierre Didot l’Aîné, An VI [1798].
12mo (138 × 84 mm). Two volumes.
Vol. I: (1) f., 230 pp., (2) ff.
Vol. II: (1) f., 213 pp., (4) ff.
Contemporary full red morocco, gilt fillet border to covers, smooth spines gilt-lettered with titles and volume numbers, gilt edges, gilt turn-ins; an attractive period binding.
Rare copy on vellum paper, in a handsome contemporary morocco binding.
The vellum-paper issue contains twelve engravings by Godefroy after Lefebvre, presented in two states, before and after letters.
Cazotte’s Ollivier is one of the most refined examples of late-eighteenth-century French prose-poetry, issued here in an elegant Didot printing. The dual states of the plates, reserved only for the superior paper issue, make this a particularly desirable example.
Minor wear to the corners of Volume II and slight sunning to both spines; otherwise a superb and well-preserved set.
