MERLE (Robert). Week-end à Zuydcoote.
Paris: NRF, 1949.
8vo (187 × 102 mm). 281 pp., (2) ff. Original printed wrappers.
First edition, with a rare author’s presentation inscription.
A copy from the regular issue, yet considerably enhanced by Merle’s uncommon inscription. Week-end à Zuydcoote, Merle’s acclaimed wartime novel set during the evacuation of Dunkirk, remains one of the most compelling French narratives of the Second World War.
The book became the basis for Henri Verneuil’s celebrated 1964 film adaptation, starring Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean-Pierre Marielle, Pierre Mondy and Georges Gérard-Périé.
A pleasing copy, clean and well preserved.
