Biography

Julien Gracq (1910–2007) was a French writer, the author of Au château d'Argol, Un beau ténébreux, Le Rivage des Syrtes (The Opposing Shore) and Un balcon en forêt (A Balcony in the Forest). An exacting writer who deliberately kept apart from public life, he occupies a singular place in twentieth-century French literature.

Born Louis Poirier at Saint-Florent-le-Vieil, in Anjou, he studied at the École normale supérieure and became a teacher of history and geography. A great reader of German literature, profoundly marked by Surrealism and by the work of André Breton in particular, he published his first novel, Au château d'Argol, in 1938 under the pseudonym Julien Gracq.

His work builds an instantly recognisable world of landscapes, waiting, frontiers and diffuse menace, carried by a prose of exceptional craftsmanship. After Un beau ténébreux in 1945, he published his most celebrated book, Le Rivage des Syrtes, in 1951. The novel was awarded the Prix Goncourt, which Gracq refused, true to his distrust of literary prizes and of the media promotion of writers.

The previous year he had published La Littérature à l'estomac, a pamphlet in which he already denounced the workings of the Parisian literary world and the growing weight given to reputation at the expense of the works themselves.

Un balcon en forêt appeared in 1958, drawn from his experience of the war of 1939–1940 in the Ardennes. From the 1960s onwards Gracq gradually moved away from the novel in favour of fragments, memories, landscapes and reflections on literature, notably in Lettrines, Les Eaux étroites and En lisant en écrivant.

Julien Gracq died in 2007, bequeathing his manuscripts to the Bibliothèque nationale de France, which now holds this major collection. By his independence, the evocative power of his style and his steadfast refusal of literary fashion, he remains one of the most singular writers of modern French literature.
