Marcel Pagnol (1895-1974) gave Provence a voice that theatre, cinema and literature carried throughout the world. An English teacher who moved to Paris, he triumphed with Topaze in 1928 and then with the Marseille trilogy, Marius, Fanny and César, before becoming one of the first French filmmaker-producers, adapting Giono in Regain and La Femme du boulanger and directing La Fille du puisatier in 1940.
