The bibliophile's glossary

Rag paper

Paper made from linen, hemp or cotton rags, without wood pulp: this is the paper of all early printed books and, since the arrival of wood pulp in the 19th century, the deluxe paper used by publishers, known as "pur chiffon" or "pur fil". Strong and acid-free, it is used for numbered copies.
