[ALEKHINE, Alexandre] BLÜMICH, Max. Aljechin - Euwe. Der Wettkampf um die Schachweltmeisterschaft 1935.
Leipzig: Verlag der Neuen Leipziger Zeitung, 1935.
Duodecimo (154 x 116 mm), 77 pp., (1) f.
Paperback, publisher's illustrated wrappers.
First edition, with the author's signature and the annotations of a chess grandmaster (Bogoljubov). The Lothar Schmid copy.
A contemporary account of the world championship match played in the Netherlands in the autumn of 1935. Alekhine, champion since 1927, led six to three after nine games. Euwe caught up at seven-all in the fourteenth game and took the title. Alekhine would regain it in 1937.
Signature of Max Blümich (1886-1942) on the title page. A chess master from Leipzig, he was also the author of the volume devoted to the 1937 return match.
Pencil annotations by Efim Bogoljubov (1889-1952), pp. 23, 26, 27, 32, 35, 36, 38, 39 and 41.
Bogoljubov was twice Alekhine's challenger for the world title, and twice defeated: fifteen and a half to nine and a half in 1929, fifteen and a half to ten and a half in 1934. He would never again contend for the crown. These are thus the notes of the man who had failed to wrest the crown from Alekhine, reading, pencil in hand, the account of the first time another man succeeded in doing so.
Spine and headcaps slightly torn, not affecting the soundness of the volume.
From the library of Lothar Schmid; with his ex-libris.
