VERCEL (Roger). Capitaine Conan.
Paris: Albin Michel, 1934.

8vo (189 × 123 mm). 254 pp., (1) f. Original printed wrappers.

First edition of great rarity, with an excellent author’s presentation inscription.
A masterpiece of interwar French literature, Capitaine Conan was awarded the Prix Goncourt in 1934. Vercel’s unflinching portrayal of soldiers in the aftermath of the Great War remains one of the most powerful anti-heroic narratives of its time. The novel was later adapted for the cinema by Bertrand Tavernier, whose film revived interest in Vercel’s work.

A very good, clean copy, the presentation inscription adding considerable desirability.
