A very fine edition, enhanced with a signed inscription: "Pour Monsieur René de Sariac, ce témoignage pour une génération mutilée, cordial hommage de Maurice Genevoix".

The copy is further enriched with a large original watercolour facing the foreword, depicting a soldier of 1914, with a signed inscription by the artist: "Pour Monsieur René de Sariac, ce poilu que je n'ai pas beaucoup vu, Berthommé Saint-André" [1905–1977, an artist who illustrated numerous editions in the 20th century].
