The play was adapted for the cinema the same year by Marc Allégret, with an exceptional cast including Raimu (César), Pierre Fresnay (Marius), Orane Demazis (Fanny) and Fernand Charpin (Panisse). The success of the film contributed significantly to the mythmaking of Pagnol’s Marseille and to the enduring popularity of the trilogy.
