Full chocolate brown morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, spine with false nerves, richly decorated boxes, gilt title, place and date, double gilt fillet on the edges, gilt edges, interior roulette (late 19th century binding).

First edition.
It contains 41 biographies and portraits of actors, etched by Frédéric Hillemacher, including the portrait of Voltaire in the frontispiece. It also includes an engraved vignette at the head of the foreword.

Small superficial defect to the spine of the first board, otherwise a superb copy.
