SIMENON (Georges). La neige était sale.
Paris: Les Presses de la Cité, 1948.
8vo (190 × 123 mm). 246 pp., (1) f. Original printed wrappers.
First edition.
A standard-issue copy of one of Simenon’s darkest and most powerful novels, written in the aftermath of the Occupation. La neige était sale explores guilt, moral corrosion and fatalism through the figure of Frank Friedmaier, in a bleak, unnamed city recognisable as occupied Belgium.
The novel was adapted for the stage in 1950 by Simenon and Frédéric Dard, and for the cinema in 1953 by Luis Saslavsky.
Light rubbing, paper slightly toned as usual. Violet ownership stamp “P. & J. Frizon” on the final leaf.
