BALZAC (de), Honoré. Les Paysans. Illustrations et eaux-fortes de Georges Jeanniot.
Paris: Société des Amis du Livre Moderne, 1911.
Quarto (297 x 220 mm). (5) ff., 376 pp., (1) f. Original wrappers and spine preserved.
Full olive-tan morocco, the front cover adorned with a large panel of incised, modelled and inlaid leather depicting, within a medallion, a peasant in a hat surrounded by a rich polychrome floral decoration of thistles, foliage, white flowers and stylised motifs, raised bands with author and title in gilt and an inlaid piece representing a thistle leaf, gilt edges, chemise and slipcase (Ch. Meunier 1914).
Illustrated edition, a large-paper copy with two original drawings.
Produced by Charles Meunier and Jean Renouard, illustrated with 51 etchings by Georges Jeanniot — two for the cover, one for the title, a frontispiece, 23 plates and 24 in the text.
One of 125 copies on vellum paper, ours no. 46, reserved for members of the Société des Amis du Livre Moderne.
Our copy is enriched with a large signed original drawing reproducing the second full-page plate of the work, at page 20. A further drawing appears on the verso of the large drawing.
Spine very faintly lightened, with one inlaid leaf slightly lifting, otherwise a superb copy.
