DOSTOÏEVSKI, Fiodor. Les possédés suivis de la Confession de Stavroguine.
Paris, Éditions Bossard, 1925.

Octavo (190 x 117 mm), 1160 pp., (1) leaf, spine and wrappers preserved.
Half morocco with corners, spine with raised bands, author, title and date gilt, top edge gilt (Semet & Plumelle).

First complete French translation of Les Possédés by Jean Chuzeville, limited issue copy.
One of 300 copies on India onionskin paper, ours no. 131.

The first French translation of the novel, by Victor Derély, had appeared in 1886. This new translation by Jean Chuzeville fully restores the Russian text and adds the celebrated Confession de Stavroguine, a chapter omitted from the original publication of the novel and rediscovered after Dostoïevski's death. The Confession had been published separately in French as early as 1922; the Bossard edition here incorporates it into the novel as part of its first complete French translation.

A superb copy.
From the library of Raoul Simonson - biographer of Gide -, with his ex-libris.
