CAYLUS (de) Marguerite. Mémoires de Madame de Caylus.
Amsterdam, Jean Robert, 1770.

In-8 (20 x 12 cm), VIII-174 pp. Full midnight blue morocco, richly decorated gilt lace on covers with double gilt fillet followed by a gilt stippled border and a new gilt fillet, spine ribbed with double gilt fillets and gilt irons in the centre and corners, edges decorated with a double gilt fillet, gilt edges, interior roulette (Chatelin).

Superb original second edition (published the same year as the first edition). The first edition ended at 176 pages, whereas the second edition, shown here, ends at 174 pages.
In his preface, Voltaire praised the outspokenness of the Marquise de Caylus, who, he said, ‘spoke with candour’. This is an important memoir of the Court of Louis XIV by the Marquise de Caylus (1671-1729), niece of Madame de Maintenon, who regarded her as her daughter.

Spine slightly oiled, one cut slightly missing (1 mm).
