HUGO, Victor. Les Travailleurs de la Mer.
Paris: La Librairie internationale, 1866.

Octavo (230 x 150 mm). Vol. I: (4) ff., 328 pp.; Vol. II: (2) ff., 327 pp.; Vol. III: (2) ff., 279 pp.
Half red chagrin, spine with raised bands, tooling at the centre of the compartments, author, title and volume-number lettering-pieces in red morocco (contemporary binding).

First edition, published simultaneously in Paris and Brussels.
This novel had a profound influence on the literature of its time: although George Sand was doubtless the first to inspire Jules Verne to write Vingt Mille Lieues sous les mers, in a celebrated letter addressed to him, Hugo's novel almost certainly inspired certain episodes of it. Gilliatt's battle against the octopus, in any case, clearly calls to mind the struggle against the giant squid and the crew of the Nautilus.

Rubbing, traces of wax on the joints of the chagrin, scattered foxing, light rubbing to the corners.
