COCTEAU, Jean (1889–1963), Autograph Letter Signed “Jean Cocteau” to Michael Smithies, 1 July 1958, with envelope. 2 pp. 8vo.

A vivid and revealing letter, written in Cocteau’s distinctive, breathless manner, in which he describes the exhaustion brought on by recent artistic commitments. He explains that he nearly collapsed from the strain of producing ceramics and two large panels for the exhibition Terre et Cosmos, while also preparing texts for forthcoming publications in Brussels.

Cocteau encloses the requested authorisation and reflects with striking frankness on the question of publishing certain early writings. He dismisses them as “not very useful”, insisting they should remain unpublished, as the motives behind Gide’s criticism were “very small and very base”, something no longer perceptible when reading the texts themselves. He reminds his correspondent that his reply to Gide was written for André Germain’s review Les Écrits Nouveaux and warns that republishing such material would distort it by removing it from its original atmosphere.

He adds a characteristic clarification concerning his recent book Paraprosodies – 7 dialogues, noting that the word “Seigneur” within those dialogues has “no religious meaning”, the “lord” addressed being himself.

Je ne trouve pas ces textes très utiles. Et même je les garderai sous silence. Car la raison de Gide étaient fort petites et fort basses et elle n'apparait pas à la lecture des textes.
Ma réponse à Gide avait pour but la revue d'André Germain Les écrits nouveaux.
Le danger de publier ce genre de choses que l'atmosphère d'époque est perdu et cela les [?] dans une atmosphère totalement fausse.
Ne vous y trompez pas le mot "Seigneur" n'a aucun sens religieux dans les dialogues.
Le seigneur auquel je m'adresse c'est moi-même."
