BERRY (Duchess of), Marie-Caroline de Bourbon-Siciles (1798–1870). Autograph letter signed “Marie Caroline”, to her “cher Ned”.
Brunsee, 24 May 1869.
3 pp., 12mo (125 × 97 mm), with engraved and hand-coloured monogram “MC”.

A late and deeply moving letter, written less than a year before her death, in which the Duchesse de Berry speaks candidly of solitude, failing eyesight, and her anxiety over the political situation in Paris.

Writing from Switzerland, she apologises for her silence: “Je suis seule, personne pour répondre et je n’y vois pas aujourd’hui…” She notes that her sight has slightly improved, enabling her to take up the pen. Her concern for her correspondent’s health is immediate, followed by her own apprehension regarding events in Paris: “je suis bien anxieuse d’avoir des détails… de tous, et de tout.”

Despite her physical frailty and isolation, the tone remains warm and affectionate: she sends “milles tendres amitiés” to her correspondent’s wife and encloses a note recommending someone to his attention. She closes with an intimate assurance: “Croyez bien à notre amitié.”

"Mon cher Ned
Croyez bien a notre amitié.
Marie Caroline"
