A confidential and highly interesting letter in which General Grouchy seeks a captaincy for his son — written just days before his distinction at the Battle of Wagram.
At the time commanding the 1st Dragoon Division of the Army of Italy, Grouchy thanks Sainte-Suzanne for his willingness to support the advancement of his son. He reveals, in strict confidence, that Colonel Curto has already proposed him for a captaincy in the 8th Chasseurs à cheval, adding that the matter must remain secret should the appointment fail. Out of discretion, he therefore declines Sainte-Suzanne’s offer for the moment, noting also the likely influence of Colonel Lacroix with the Viceroy.

Grouchy nonetheless asks to be alerted immediately if another captain’s post should fall vacant in the 9th Chasseurs, insisting on his desire to see his son serving under Sainte-Suzanne. The tone is warm, personal and strategic — emblematic of the tightly interwoven networks of favour and patronage within the Napoleonic officer corps.

Mes remerciemens, mon cher Ste Susane, de votre obligeant souvenir relativement a l'avancement de mon fils : une proposition a une place de capitaine dans le 8eme de chasseurs a cheval a déjà été faite en sa faveur, par le Colonel Curto : (ceci pour vous seul, je vous prie, attendu que si la chose manque, je désire qu'on l'ignore) d'après cela, je ne profiterai point de votre ouverture : d'ailleurs, il y a a parier que le colonel Lacroix aurait trop d'influence sur le vice roy, pour ne pas faire placer, de préférence, celui que déjà il a fait nommer capitaine a la suite.
Je n'en suis pas moins touché, mon cher Ste Suzanne, de la preuve d'attachement, que vous me donnez, dans cette circonstance et vous prie, dans le cas où la demande faite par le Colonel Curto ne vous siroit pas, et qu'une autre place de capitaine viendrait a vaquer dans le 9eme, de m'en prévenir, afin que je ne perde pas un moment à la demande. De toute manière, je serais heureux de voir mon fils avec vous.

The letter is written shortly after Grouchy’s success at Raab (14 June 1809) and barely a week before the Battle of Wagram (6 July 1809), where he again distinguished himself, paving the way to his appointment as Colonel-General of the Chasseurs à cheval of the Imperial Guard.
