A vivid and spirited letter in which Louÿs mixes bibliophilic gossip from the Charavay catalogue with naval anecdotes delivered in his unmistakably sharp, playful tone.

Louÿs begins by citing an item from the latest Charavay catalogue, rue de Furstemberg. Item no. 60604 was acquired by a certain Lerey, who writes to him that “the original is even more beautiful than the catalogue states.” Re-reading his own note, Lerey wonders whether “the lady” will understand what he expects of her. Louÿs adds with amusement that the elegant sky-blue officer appended a postscript: “The day after the dinner I shall re-enlist her.”

He then explains that Jacques’ most recent letter required an answer, prompting Louÿs to condense eight pages into three, “and I toned it down.” Still, the message remained severe, especially considering the distinguished service record of its addressee. Louÿs notes that “for ten years he has refused all postings at sea”, and that he would have been “a frigate captain for two years already, had he not absolutely refused to leave Paris.” Yet when asked for a similar favour on behalf of a friend, he replies only: “Leave! and rejoice!”

The letter closes with a brief naval update: “Dead calm at Toulon. The battleships were heavily worked last week, the funnels of the Suffren and the Masséna were burned through, but the funnels have been repainted and no one speaks anymore of imminent departures.”

Ce n°60604 a été acquis par Lerey qui m'écrit, ou à peu près : 
"L'original est encore plus beau que le catalogue ne l'indique."
En relisant sa lettre, il s'est demandé si la dame comprendrait ce qu'il attendait d'elle. Et le bel officier bleu ciel a ajouté en post-scriptum : 
"Le lendemain du dîner je le réengagerai."

Comme la dernière lettre de Jacques appelait tout à fait une réponse, j'ai fini par lui résumer en 3 pages les 8 pages que tu es seul à connaître ; et j'ai atténué. Tout de même la lettre était raide, surtout quand on pense aux états de service du signataire. Voilà dix ans qu'il refuse tous les embarquements pour lui-même. Je sais, de source, certaine, qu'il serait capitaine de frégate depuis deux ans, s'il méprisait pas absolument de quitter Paris. Et quand on lui demande un service analogue pour un ami, il répond : "Partez ! et rejouissez-vous !"
Calme plat à Toulon. On a beaucoup fatigué les cuirassers la semaine dernière, on a brûlé les cheminées du Suffren et du Masséna mais les cheminées sont repeintes et on ne parle plus de prochains départs.
