MONTHERLANT, Henry de (1895–1972), Autograph Letter Signed “Montherlant” to Léon Breich, Paris, n.d. 2 pp. 8vo.

A notable and revealing letter in which Montherlant urges the prompt publication in L’Éclair of a laudatory article by Dr Brunet concerning his latest book. He explains that the piece was accepted through Breich’s good offices and stresses the importance of ensuring that it does not remain “too long on the marble,” awaiting print.

Montherlant highlights the stature of Dr Brunet, described as not only a former colleague at La Porte de Sauveur but also an eminent scientist, serving as deputy director of the Institut Pasteur of Tunis. For this reason, he fears that any delay might lead Brunet to believe that Montherlant himself disapproved of the article, creating an unnecessary misunderstanding.

M. Coguial me dit que par votre aimable intermédiaire, l'Eclair a accepté l'article du Dr Burnet sur mon dernier livre. Pour le remercier je vous demande de bien vouloir ne pas oublier cet article. Vous savez [?] qui eut le dr. Brunet, non seulement [?] à la Porte de Sauveur, mais un éminent savant, directeur adjoint de l'Institut Pasteur de Tunis. C'est pour lui beaucoup dire que pour moi que [?] beaucoup à ce que cet article ne reste pas trop longtemps sur le marbre. Ne le voyant pas paraître, peut-être le dr. Brunet croira-t-il que cet article ne m'a pas plu, et que c'est moi qui ai empêché la publication.
