NECKER, Jacques (1732–1804). Autograph letter signed (“Necker”) to M. Mistral.
Versailles, 16 November 1788.
1 page, 4to (310 × 200 mm).
A fine letter from Necker, then Director-General of Finance, concerning the sale of packet boats at Le Havre.
Writing from Versailles during the turbulent months preceding the Revolution, Necker instructs M. Mistral to announce the sale of packet boat no. 1 together with the others, so as to obtain “le meilleur délai possible.” He concludes by reaffirming his trust: “je le fais, monsieur, avec confiance.”
An excellent example of Necker’s financial and administrative correspondence at a pivotal moment in the monarchy’s final crisis, showing his direct management of maritime assets and public auctions.
A very well-preserved document.
