NECKER, Jacques (1732–1804). Autograph letter signed (“Necker”) to Madame de Chantraine.
Paris, 26 August 1777.
1 page, 4to (330 × 218 mm).
An excellent letter from Necker as Director-General of the Royal Treasury, acting expressly in the King’s name.
Writing to Madame de Chantraine, Necker addresses the long-outstanding arrears owed by the communities of arts and trades (communautés d’arts & métiers). He conveys the King’s decision to appoint commissioners of the royal council to undertake the liquidation of these debts, thereby confirming that the matter has entered the highest administrative channels.
A clear and authoritative example of Necker’s administrative correspondence during the crucial years that preceded the financial collapse of the monarchy.
A very good, well-preserved document.
