FORT, Paul (1872–1960), Autograph Letter Signed “Paul Fort”, 2 February 1909.

1 page in-8 (207 × 130 mm).

A humorous and touching appeal for a financial advance of one hundred francs, laced with literary allusions and theatrical self-mockery.

Fort writes in a tone of playful desperation, explaining that he, his wife, and an unfortunate invited friend find themselves “on the Raft of the Medusa”, a dramatic image meant to convey their predicament. He begs his correspondent not to leave him “without hope”, and wonders how he might avoid being “too much Villon” in such a situation, confessing instead that they are merely “Hamlets who without you will perish”.

He admits to being “greatly embarrassed with my innkeeper”, and asks his friend to forgive a request that weighs on him: a loan of one hundred francs. He signs off with affectionate insistence, apologising again for the lateness of the hour and adding one last self-deprecating flourish: “What will you think of your Villon?”

"2 fév. 1909.
Mon cher ami,

Paul Fort.

Il est bien tard. Je suis désolé. Qu'allez-vous croire de votre Villon. A Samedi surtout."
