A highly interesting letter from Talleyrand, then Minister of Foreign Relations under the Consulate, revealing his scholarly interest in classical philology — specifically the evolution of Greek lettering.
Talleyrand requests his correspondent to obtain several publications from London:

He first asks for Stool’s List, a naval and commercial intelligence booklet issued monthly in wartime and quarterly in peacetime, instructing that two copies be subscribed — one for himself in Paris and the other for Citizen Reinhard in Hamburg — together with the six most recent numbers.

He then requests Richard Payne Knight’s Analytical Essay upon the Greek Alphabet (London, 1791), a quarto volume with eleven engraved plates, a foundational work in the study of Greek palaeography and typological development.
