A period gelatin silver print, enriched with his signature in black ink in the lower margin. The back of the frame indicates "photo dédicacée par le Général De Gaulle au R.P. Thery".
The portrait was taken in early August 1940 and was published in The Illustrated London News of 17 August 1940. It was then widely circulated by the British and the French, notably in the leaflets parachuted over occupied France from 1942.
Reverend Father Thery (1891–1959), or Gabriel Théry, was a theologian, historian and religious author of the Order of Preachers. He was also a professor at the Institut Catholique de Paris.
