Published under King’s pseudonym Richard Bachman, Roadwork has become one of the key titles of the Bachman corpus. King initially hesitated to release the novel, believing it to be a minor work; he later chose to publish it unchanged in order to offer readers a candid glimpse of his state of mind during its composition. In the preface to the second edition, he famously reversed his judgment, calling it his favourite among his early novels.
