Full red morocco, triple gilt fillet frame, richly gilt spine in compartments, gilt title, gilt fillets on turn-ins, elaborate gilt inner dentelle, gilt edges, bordered slipcase. Binding by Reymann.

Illustrated edition. One of only 75 copies on heavy China paper, with a separate suite of the illustrations.
Exceptional copy, lavishly extra-illustrated with two original watercolours (one on the half-title, one full-page) and a long autograph letter signed by André Theuriet, 6 pages, addressed to Jules Claretie.

Provenance: from the library of Alfred Clericeau, with his bookplate; later from the library of Jean-Claude Delaunay, with his bookplate.
