Biography

Michel Houellebecq (born in 1956) is a French novelist, poet and essayist, author notably of Extension du domaine de la lutte, Les Particules élémentaires, Plateforme, La Carte et le Territoire and Soumission. Translated in many countries, he is one of the best-known contemporary French writers abroad.

Born Michel Thomas in Saint-Pierre, on the island of Réunion, he trained as an agricultural engineer before gradually devoting himself to literature. He began with poetry and essays, notably a work devoted to H. P. Lovecraft, before publishing his first novel in 1994, Extension du domaine de la lutte.

With Les Particules élémentaires, published in 1998, Michel Houellebecq achieved wide renown. Through the trajectories of two half-brothers, the novel develops several themes that would run throughout his work: loneliness, desire, ageing, the transformation of romantic relationships and the consequences of contemporary individualism.

These were followed notably by Plateforme in 2001, La Possibilité d'une île in 2005 and La Carte et le Territoire, which received the Prix Goncourt in 2010. In Soumission (2015), Sérotonine (2019) and then Anéantir (2022), he continues his observation of the social, emotional and political shifts within contemporary French society.

Houellebecq's writing is characterised by a deliberately spare style, blending narrative, social observation, dark humour and meditative passages. Behind the provocative dimension often associated with his work lies a constant reflection on loneliness, love, the disappearance of religion, and the difficulty individuals face in finding their place in the modern world.

As much a novelist as a poet and essayist, Michel Houellebecq occupies a singular place in contemporary French literature, both for the scale of his international reception and for the way his novels have, since the 1990s, tracked the transformations of Western society.
