Compartments

The compartments of a binding's spine delimited by the raised bands, or, on a smooth spine, by gilt fillets imitating them. The compartments bear the decoration of the spine — fleurons, tools, powdering, dotted work — and, in two of them, the title-piece and the volume-number piece.
