Title label

A small piece of leather, most often morocco, of contrasting colour, glued into a compartment of the spine and bearing the gilt title of the work; a volume-number piece, in a different shade, accompanies it on works in several volumes. In general use from the 17th to the 19th century, the title-piece is described by its colour and condition.
