PETITY (Jean-Raymond, Abbé). Étrennes françoises, dédiées à la ville de Paris ; pour l’année jubilaire du règne de Louis le Bien-Aimé.
Paris: Pierre-Guillaume Simon, 1766.
8vo (248 × 178 mm). (3) ff., 68 pp. Contemporary full red morocco, triple gilt fillet border, arms at the centre of each cover, smooth spine gilt in repeated compartments with cornerpieces and central tools, gilt edges, gilt roll to board edges; a fine period binding.
First issue, with the arms of Louis XVI and the city of Paris.
Illustrated with two plates of armorial bearings, five medallion figures by Saint-Aubin, and one allegorical plate by Gravelot, engraved by Chenu, Duclos and Littret.
A second issue exists bearing the imprint of Desnos and including the almanac for 1768. A third issue contains the figures by Lélu engraved by Chenu after Petity’s designs. The present example, with the early suite of plates by Saint-Aubin and Gravelot, is the desirable first.
Small restorations to head and foot of spine, discreet and well executed. Short tear to page 24. A handsome armorial copy, well preserved.
