(4) ff., 64 pp. Full aubergine morocco, triple gilt fillet border, spine with raised bands richly gilt in double-panelled compartments with cornerpieces and central rose tool, gilt lettering, double gilt fillet to board edges, gilt edges, gilt turn-ins; original wrappers and backstrip preserved; uncut. Binding by Chambolle-Duru.

First edition, one of the tête-de-tirage.

The play premiered on 11 February 1895 at the Comédie-Française. Lemaitre, then one of the central figures of the Parisian theatrical world, offers here a refined and psychologically nuanced comedy, characteristic of his late dramatic style.

A discreet and skilful colour retouching to the joints; otherwise a superb and exceptionally fine copy, in a choice binding by Chambolle-Duru.
