TOULET, Paul-Jean. Autograph manuscript for a draft of a play adapted from Métier d'amant.
N.p., n.pub., n.d. [1900].

Octavo (240 x 190 mm). (21) ff.
Red half-cloth boards à la Bradel, smooth spine, author and title in gilt (attributable to Semet & Plumelle).

An unpublished autograph manuscript of an unfinished draft for a play based on the novel Métier d'amant, co-written by Toulet and Curnonsky and published under the pseudonym Perdiccas (Simonis Empis, 1900).

Fifteen loose fair-copy leaves, in another hand, have been added.

The manuscript comprises notes on the unfolding of Act I in 12 scenes, as well as fragments of dialogue and monologues.
From the Jean de Buzelet collection, the manuscript is described as no. 58 in the catalogue of the Paul-Jean Toulet exhibition held at the Bibliothèque Nationale in 1968.

Convinced that « Il n'y a que deux routes qui mènent le poète à la gloire, le théâtre et la politique », Toulet tried his hand at dramatic writing several times: a comedy and an occasional piece in verse of his own composition were performed at the Théâtre des Nouveautés in Algiers, then a plan to translate As You Like It for a musical setting by Debussy came to nothing. His play Le Souper Interrompu, published posthumously in 1922, was performed for the first time at the Théâtre de Monte-Carlo on 4 December 1928.

A fine copy in its half-cloth boards à la Bradel, probably Semet & Plumelle, since Jean de Buzelet (1904–1972) entrusted many of his books to them.
From the library of Jean de Buzelet; lot no. 22 in the sale of 27 May 2025.
