Wood engravings

The woodcut is found as much in incunabula as in the illustrated book of later centuries, executed either in wood-block or wood-engraving depending on the period. Its strength lies in the quality of the impression, the fineness of the line and, often, in the close collaboration between engraver and printer — a body of work best appreciated when preserved in a state as close as possible to its original condition.
