An «aux armes» binding (or Coat of arms binding) is recognisable by the stamp struck on the covers, marking the volume's ownership by a personage of rank — sovereign, great lord, or institution. The bibliophilic interest lies as much in the provenance as in the binding itself: identification of the coat of arms, rarity of the copy, history of the recipient. An entire chapter of the history of princely and noble libraries can thus be read upon a cover of calf or morocco.
