Contemporary binding

A contemporary binding is one that clothed the work at the very moment of its publication, in the taste and according to the customs of its time. Calf, sheepskin, morocco or simple boards tell, through their craftsmanship, a material history of the book as precious as the text they protect — and it is this contemporaneity between the content and its garb that makes it, in the eyes of the collector, one of the chief attractions of the rarest works.
