PHILIPPE, Charles-Louis. Bubu de Montparnasse. Nouvelle édition illustrée de 90 lithographies de Grandjouan
Paris: Librairie Universelle, [1905].
Octavo (222 × 192 mm), pp. (3), 250, (3). Original wrappers preserved. Bottle-green half morocco, raised bands, untrimmed. Binding by Ch. Boilot.
Numbered Japan-paper issue of this illustrated edition. One of 30 copies on Japan paper with wide margins, after 15 copies on Chine, from the edition illustrated with 90 lithographs by Jules Grandjouan (1875–1968).
First published in 1901, Bubu de Montparnasse is among the most striking works of late naturalism, offering a vivid and often brutal portrait of popular Paris and the world of prostitution around Montparnasse. Charles-Louis Philippe’s novel remains one of the most memorable literary evocations of the demi-monde of the capital at the turn of the twentieth century.
From the library of François-Léon Jouinot Gambetta (1870–1923), nephew of Léon Gambetta, with his bookplate.
Very slight rubbing, otherwise a handsome copy.
