Rare first edition, with a presentation inscription from the author's son - himself a companion of Napoleon at Saint-Helena.
Complete with its three folding plates: the plan of Longwood and the two maps depicting the Italian campaign and the island of Saint-Helena.

Las Cases followed Napoleon into exile in 1815, accompanied by his son Emmanuel-Pons, then fifteen years old. There he recorded daily the Emperor's conversations, memories and reflections; Emmanuel-Pons took a direct part in the making of the future Mémorial by fair-copying his father's journal. After their expulsion from Saint-Helena in 1816, their papers were confiscated by the British authorities and were not returned to Las Cases until 1822, allowing the work to be published the following year.

The Mémorial caused an immense sensation upon publication and played an essential role in shaping the Napoleonic legend in the nineteenth century. The inscription by Emmanuel-Pons is of particular interest here: far from being merely the author's son, he was a direct witness to the events recounted and one of the hands materially involved in the drafting of the work.

Handsome copies, notwithstanding scattered foxing throughout the volumes, a very discreet restoration to the joint of the first volume, an old marginal dampstain to the lower margin of volume 6, and foxing to the map of the island of Saint-Helena.

Vicaire, V, 73; Carteret, II, 36; Clouzot, 184-185; En français dans le texte, 235.
