Literature

Born of the need to pass on stories, ideas and emotions, literature has accompanied societies since Antiquity. First oral, it was set down in manuscripts before flourishing decisively with the invention of printing. Poetry, drama, the novel and the essay progressively shaped the great European literary traditions. From Homer to the modern writers, it bears witness to the evolution of languages, sensibilities and representations of the world.
